I LOVE it when researchers approach people with lived experience when planning their studies. It’s the very best way to make sure research is actually going to serve the population it needs to! Have you experienced gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy? Do you live in the UK? Can you contribute your experiences and opinions to some Gestational Diabetes Research?
Over to Ruya to tell you more:

PhD student at the University of Oxford
About the research:
Hi, my name is Ruya and I am a PhD student at the University of Oxford, funded by Diabetes UK. My research aims to better understand a condition that affects many pregnancies – gestational diabetes, i.e., diabetes that is first recognised during pregnancy. We’ve seen from previous research that having gestational diabetes in pregnancy puts the mother at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease after the pregnancy. My PhD sets out to better understand why gestational diabetes increases these long-term risks, and how best to reduce them.
I’m passionate about ensuring that the perspectives and ideas of women who have experienced gestational diabetes in a past pregnancy are echoed throughout my research, and that it is important and relevant to those who it impacts the most.
As part of my PhD, I am currently planning a study which will involve the use of text messages sent to women with a history of gestational diabetes. This is where you come in! If you have had experience with gestational diabetes in a past pregnancy, I would love to hear your feedback on this research as a patient and public involvement (PPI) contributor.
What does it involve?
This PPI activity will involve an online Teams meeting for 30-45 minutes, where you will be asked for feedback on the content of a text message intended to be sent to women with a history of gestational diabetes and for your perspectives on the wider project currently being planned.
Reimbursement for time?
Yes, we will reimburse you £25 for your time with us via bank transfer.
If you are interested in taking part, please send me an email at ruya.abdulsalam@spc.ox.ac.uk. I really look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks Ruya!
