About the research

Hi, my name is Mitanshi and I am a third-year PhD Student in Health Psychology at the University of Manchester.

Mitanshi is sat on a bench with her legs crossed, smiling at the camera. Her long, dark hair is tied back and she's wearing a white blouse and blue jeans.

Currently, as a part of my PhD I’m conducting an online survey study looking to understand how family communication styles might in some way be linked to attitudes towards weight gain during pregnancy. This research is looking at UK and Indian women. We know from previous research that women experience various changes in weight and appearance during pregnancy, with families playing an important role in providing support and advice about their weight and related behaviours such as diet and physical activity during this time.

All families have a particular communication style, both the one we’re born into, and that of our partner’s family. This varies across cultures. This work is important as it will help inform our understanding of which ways of communication by the family need to be addressed in efforts to help improve women’s attitudes towards weight gain during pregnancy in two cultures, and ultimately better their and the infant’s health outcomes in the long run.

What does it involve?

Participation will require you to complete a short, anonymous online survey asking some basic questions about yourself, family communication styles, and attitudes towards weight gain during pregnancy (taking about 10-15 mins). To be able to take part, you would need to meet the below eligibility criteria:

  • Be at least 18 weeks pregnant
  • Be living in the U.K.
  • 18 years of age or over
  • In contact with one or both parents
  • Able to read, write, and understand English
  • Have access to a computer, tablet, or mobile phone with Internet connection

Reimbursement for your time?

Yes, if you wish (optional), there is a prize draw with a chance to win an Amazon giftcard prize (these are giftcard vouchers to spend online). The prize draw will include 2 x £20 vouchers (equivalent to a total of £40). To ensure each participant has an equal chance, winners will be picked by a computerised random number identifier.
